All subjects had no severe acute symptoms, and had good tolerance to electronic cigarettes, which partially confirmed the short-term safety of electronic cigarettes.
Lantong New Consumption Report, November 25, reported that on November 23, the medical SCI journal Nicotine and Tobacco Research published the results of the first clinical study of e-cigarettes in China, which confirmed that the pharmacokinetic characteristics of nicotine in e-cigarettes were close to those of cigarettes, and could be used to alleviate the “withdrawal reaction”.
The research was initiated by RELX Yueke (Foxcore Technology) in March 2021, and is the first clinical research project of electronic cigarettes registered in China’s Clinical Trial Registration Center (ChiCTR) and the World Health Organization’s International Clinical Trial Registration Platform (WHO ICTRP).
The more similar nicotine metabolic characteristics are to cigarettes, the more likely it is to help smokers alleviate withdrawal reactions. This study took Chinese smokers as the object and obtained relevant clinical data for the first time. Twenty-three subjects were randomly assigned to two groups. They were free to smoke on the first day, and then used electronic cigarettes and cigarettes alternately on the next two days. The experimenter collects the blood and other samples of the subjects in real time, and tests their heart rate, blood oxygen saturation and other indicators.
The results show that when subjects use electronic cigarettes, the peak concentration, peak time and absorption rate of nicotine in their plasma are similar to those when they use cigarettes, suggesting that the nicotine delivery efficiency of electronic cigarettes is close to that of cigarettes. At the same time, in the same environment, the total amount of nicotine delivered by e-cigarettes may be less.
In addition, in the experiment, all subjects did not have severe acute symptoms and had good tolerance to electronic cigarettes, which partially confirmed the short-term safety of electronic cigarettes.
Zhong Guoping, head of the study and deputy director of the Center for Atomization Science and Technology of Sun Yat-sen University, said that the study had collected complete data on nicotine metabolism kinetics of Chinese smokers for the first time, suggesting that electronic cigarettes may help smokers alleviate nicotine withdrawal symptoms, which has an important guiding role for follow-up research.
